New York - Vera Zvonareva made it to the third round of U.S. Open Grand Slam. But, second-seeded Russian had to work hard first time face Kateryna Bondarenko.
In the second round matches on Thursday (01/09/2011) pm dawn, Zvonareva won the opening set with the score 7-5. But, in the second set, it gave up last year's finalists from Bondarenko 3-6.
In the final set, Zvonareva did not repeat his mistake and end Bondarenko resistance with the score 6-3. In total, he took two hours seven minutes to repatriate the Ukrainian tennis player.
Zvonareva will be challenged 30th-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, in the third round. Garrigues qualified after defeating Laura Robson (Britain) 6-2, 6-3.
Other players who have confirmed themselves to qualify for the third round, among others, Maria Kirilenko, Peng Shuai, Julia Goerges, Lucie Safarova, and Monica Niculescu.
